Once upon a time, a troubled disciple approached his wise guru with great concern. “Guruji,” he lamented, “despite my earnest efforts, I cannot rid myself of my bad habits. They cling to me like a shadow.”
The guru, ever patient and understanding, listened attentively. After a moment of contemplation, he beckoned the disciple to follow him. They walked to a nearby pillar, weathered and steadfast. The guru grasped the pillar firmly and, in a surprising gesture, addressed it: “Please, pillar, move away from me.”
The disciple, confused by the peculiar scene, couldn’t help but voice his thoughts. “But Guruji,” he exclaimed, “the pillar cannot move by itself.”
With a wise smile, the guru turned to his disciple. “Exactly,” he said. “Just as this pillar cannot move on its own, your bad habits cannot leave you without effort. You see, it is not the pillar that needs to move; it is I who must let go.”
He continued, “Your bad habits are like this pillar. They cannot leave you on their own. You must make the conscious effort to change from within. Just as I hold onto this pillar, you are holding onto your habits. Let go, and take active steps towards change.”
This profound lesson sank deep into the disciple’s heart. He realized that the power to overcome his shortcomings lay within himself, through self-discipline and personal responsibility.
Moral of the Story: To overcome our shortcomings and cultivate positive habits, we must take active steps towards change, embracing self-discipline and personal responsibility.
